CVS Health has recalled the brand hair loss brand Propecia, which was used in the Proscar trial, in the U. S. and Canada, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday.
The recall comes after the company said Tuesday it would again suspend its sale of the hair loss drug to Canadian pharmacies, including the retail outlets in the U.
The company said the recall was also for the sale of other drugs, including a treatment for breast cancer that the company said is also being recalled. The drug is the brand name of finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia and its generic version, Proscar.
A total of 10,000 men taking Propecia were also on the trial. The women and the men in the trial were on finasteride tablets and Proscar was prescribed a placebo, the FDA said.
The FDA said Proscar is the only treatment for male-pattern baldness in the U. S., and it is a treatment for about 1 million men, according to the agency.
The agency said the drug was also used by more than 4 million Americans as part of a clinical trial to see if it could help prevent the onset of baldness in the elderly.
The FDA said it will continue to monitor the trial and will notify pharmacies that they have recalled the drug. The company said it has not made any changes to the label on the Proscar product, but it said it is awaiting the results of the clinical trial.
The FDA said that Proscar is not recommended for use by men over the age of 60 because it is less effective in the elderly and there is no evidence that it is more effective in the general population. However, the FDA said it will continue to monitor Proscar’s safety and effectiveness.
The FDA said the FDA issued a public advisory advising consumers that finasteride was the best treatment for hair loss in the U. and Canada and that Proscar was the only treatment for male-pattern baldness in the U.
